The demo is out now for Xbox360 and PSN, and I managed to get an hour or so this afternoon to sit and see what this game is all about.
Developed by Insomniac Games and produced by EA, this four player co-operative shooter takes place in the not-too distant future, the plot line to the game is you play as an Agent in Overstrike 9, a task force set up to reclaim a particle known as 'Fuse'. While the demo doesnt give too much away, it does uncover the fact that 'Fuse' is an alien particle that when used, makes weaponry alot more powerful and effective. Each character has their own unique ability, already enhanced using this particle. For example, one of the characters has a shield which can extend outwards and blocks all incoming fire. When upgraded later on in the game, this ability sends bullets back at the enemy.
The actual gameplay is set third-person, and plays very similar to games such as Gears Of War and Defiance. As well as the solo single player campaign, it is also possible to take your game online and join up with friends, as this game was designed for Co-Op play. If you decide to play single player, the quite impressive AI will take control of those characters not chosen by you. Bear in mind that whilst you play, there is also the option of switching characters in-game (I believe the developers called this the LEAP feature) in case you need to change your game style. If you choose to play solo but keep your privacy open, friends can choose to pop in and out of your game, no paused loading screen necessary! Levelling up is achieved by gaining xp, and this allows to to increase your skills by means of the skill tree.
The game is very well designed, and I can tell they have spent a fair amount of time designing the on screen HUD as well as the enviroment. At no point did I feel there was too much going on, even whilst under heavy fire from multiple directions. This game is due for release on the 31st May (UK), and I think it will prove to be a surprisingly popular hit among players. As it feels alot like GOW, I found I picked up the controls incredibly quickly, and this is definitely one of Fuse's biggest appeal points to me. Also I am intrigued by the story's use of the Fuse particle. The story writers really have done a fantastic piece of work with this demo, and I look forward to playing the full game.
