Today is a day that we at Simply Gaming have been waiting for for a while- the release of Dying Light. We played a very early Alpha version of this game 2 years ago at Eurogamer, and at the time thought it was a clever idea, something new, something...different. It had it's bugs, but it was good. Now a good 2 and a bit years later we finally have it in our hands!!
Firstly, you are already well introduced to Techland, the guys behind the scenes. These are the guys and girls who brought us the amazing Dead Island series. This is very apparent in the game play when attacking enemies, but is done well enough that you can tell there have been improvements since the Dead Island days. Feeling very pick-up-and-play, the controls are nice and simple (once you get used to that jump button- bumper buttons guys, really??). According to developer interviews, firearms are very rare in the world, and ammunition even rarer. Having said this, we have found many weapons as the story progresses, to the point where you end up selling them to clear inventory space! Techland have made it so that the "eaters" will react to sound and (sometimes) light.
Speaking of light, Dying Light has a very nice night and day cycle. However, during the night cycle is when you will want to limit your outdoor activities as eaters will become more fierce, and won't idly stand around waiting for you. They will respond much quicker to you at night and almost hunt you. It is advised that you find a safe place to rest at night...unless forced to by missions and whatnot. However if you do venture out, you are rewarded with double xp.
Dying Light has a fairly solid set story from what we can tell. Much like Dead Island (I have a feeling it will be mentioned a lot haha) you have your main objective, but you also have secondaries where you do other missions to help others who, like you, are trying to survive the Harran virus.
As an open world game, your primary means of exploration is your feet, or more specifically, your free-running parkour skills! This technique is invaluable to the player, and essentially is the game. Thankfully the movement is smooth, so players won't get much motion sickness (compared to some games I could mention...).
The only problem with Dying Light I feel is that to be honest, it could of been just as popular if it were renamed to Dead Island 3. The addition of free running/parkour to the extent that Techland has gone to is very impressive, but I don't feel it's enough to label it a new franchise.
However, it is very impressive and it's amazing to see Techland on this new generation of console (or PC if your that way inclined). There are DLC's on the way, as well as another game mode called 'Be The Zombie' that we haven't tried out yet, but we will. Hopefully you will too!
